Per colpa di is yet another common translation of due to and because of in Italian. It literally means “for way of”.

However, per colpa di has a negative connotation. It introduces the thing or the person that is to blame for an accident.

How to use per colpa di, per via di, a causa di

These 3 expressions always precede a noun. If the noun is preceded by an indefinite article, the preposition di remains unchanged.

I failed the exam because of a mistake.

Abbiamo litigato per via di un malinteso.
We argued because of a misunderstanding.

With definite articles, however, you must use an articulated form of the di preposition from the table below.
